ok i shall blog, and i'm going to talk about one of my two passions in life aside from star wars, and that's......BATMAN!!! yes guys, i'm suddenly into batman again for some reason and i just feel like rambling on about it right now.. so as far as i'm concerned, only 3 of the 5 existing batman films are worth mentioning, that are Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), and Batman Begins (2005). Batman Forever (1995) and Batman and Robin (1997) both suck 16 flavours of ass and nearly killed the franchise until Begins rescued it last year.

so which is the best batman film? or rather, which is my favourite? it's a difficult dilemma, and a nearly impossible task. that's like asking me who's the prettiest among monica bellucci, natalie portman and camilla belle. each of them brings a different flavour to the table, see?

let's start with Batman. what i like about this film is the fact that it's revolutionary, yea you read that right, it's downright unimaginably creative and overturns the conventional notion that comic books are kiddie stuff. this film made comic book movies something to be taken seriously and not as juvenile trash. you guys might find it hard to figure out just how influential this film was, but it basically transformed everyone's mindset about the idea of Batman from his campy roots since the 1960s tv serials. it's safe to say that without 'Batman', there wouldn't be X-Men, Spiderman, or any other respectable and critically lauded comic book movies which we currently are enjoying. ok crap, i've harped on too much already, need to move on...

ok so Batman Returns...it's a weird and bizzare film to say the least. it's got the same director, the same lead actor, the same composer, but the whole feel of the film is just different from the first one, different, but not necessarily worse. it has another sort of appeal from that of Batman. first of all, the tone is almost nightmarish, extremely dark and brooding and depressing, and 90% of the film is set at night. the characters are highly psychological disturbed creatures and it's not a kid-friendly film, with plenty of violence and sexual innuendos. but it's precisely due to the darkness gothic nature of the film that i like this film. i find that this sort of atmosphere fits the notion of the 'Dark Knight' perfectly. it's certainly not a feel-good film, and not the typical summer blockbuster crowd-pleaser. it feels more like a comic-book ART film, with complex characterisations and subtle art designs which reflects batman's psychology. ok, the whole bleak vibe of the film just did it for me, so ok, on to the last one..

Batman Begins is a whole other sort of beast. it's a 180 degrees turn from the style of the above two batman films. whereas Batman and Batman Returns are extremely stylised films with superbly distinctive art direction under the visionary eye of Tim Burton, Begins tend to be more down to earth and sticking strictly to realism. it's almost devoid of any trace of being a comic book movie and more of a dramatic character study of a guy called Batman, why and how he became the hero. it sounds mundane, but in practice, the film works wonders. it's fascinating to see how batman acquires his training and prowess, his wonderful toys and gadgets, and his true motive to don the cape and cowl. and this time, the greatest appeal of this film lies in the fact that it focuses 100% on batman, with the villains taking a back seat instead of the vice versa scenario in the first two films.

ok so with that, i think Batman succeeds as a terrifically styled action-packed movie that made audiences worldwide understand the real batman, the dark and vengeful vigilante. Batman Returns improves upon the style and deepens the atmosphere, which are very important aspects of a batman movie to me personally. finally, begins triumphs as the first movie to truly care about the development of batman as a plausible character from start to finish, and that's the most wonderful tribute a movie can make to a comic-book-originated character. yea..so i love them all!
