Apparently, the Singapore Flyer, designed after the London Eye, will boost the Singapore economy by attracting an annual 2.5million visitors, create thousands of jobs thereby increasing employment rate while reducing unemployment as well as boost investment in the country. So essentially, it's going to help improve our economic growth. Sounds really good doesn't it?

Not necessarily so.

You see, our government, in making these forecasts, is simply doing something that all good economists are supposed to do: Assume. So they are assuming that there will be a strong base of local support and enthusiasm for the Flyer, because only then can the projected 2.5million visitors target be achieved. So assume that a ride on it costs $50 dollars. Are you going to seriously ride it more than once a year? If we don't, surely we cannot count on the tourists to hit that target of 2.5million. If that happens, then the Singapore Flyer will not see the forecasted rate of 2.5million riders. Therefore, assumptions are only good up to a certain point and should remain simply ASSUMPTIONS, not to taken too seriously.

Best of luck for tomorrow's paper.
